+“What are we doing & why are we doing it?”
+A Church Warden wrote to me recently and said, “It seems to me that if the main function of the church is to endlessly raise funds to keep going, it rather misses the point of having a church community.  It would be such a pity if we lost sight of the spiritual side of church life in our anxiety to make money to pay the bills.   At the service last Sunday the church was full and there was a lively welcoming atmosphere - surely that is what the Church is all about.  (We) have been talking about developing all our Church life and generally becoming more inclusive.”
+How right she is.   Despite our best efforts to talk about God, our people and communities and how best to serve them, we always have to come back to fundraising.
+So.....Saturday 21st September at 10.00am.....let’s talk about how we best serve God and His people.....and we won’t mention money at all!
+I’ve talked with the Readers and Priests of our Parishes and we’ve come up with an idea in two parts (with a bacon sandwich and a cuppa thrown in somewhere!):
+.	 We would like to get representatives from each of our eight parishes and spend a couple of hours looking at what our churches do and why; to consider the good and the not so good; and we want everyone to share their ideas honestly and openly.
+.	Then we’d like to look at what we can do better or what we need to start afresh or what we can do that’s new (is there something we always wanted to do but never got round to it?!).
+There will then be time for us to go back to our individual parishes and talk these ideas through in each church/community and get their ideas, before the Reps reconvene on Sat 8th November to finalise our plans.
+So please start talking.....what are we doing and why.....put some ideas down.....help us equip our churches to face the future with confidence.
+**Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.**\\

+where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy.
+O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand;
+to be loved as to love.  For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

+===== On the outskirts of a small town =====
+On the outskirts of a small town, there was a big, old walnut tree just inside the churchyard fence. One day, two boys filled up a bucketful of nuts and sat down by the tree, out of sight, and began dividing the nuts.  'One for you, one for me, one for you, one for me,' said one boy.  Several dropped and rolled down toward the fence.   Another boy came riding along the road on his bicycle. As he passed, he thought he heard voices from inside the cemetery. He slowed down to investigate. Sure enough, he heard, 'One for you, one for me, one for you, one for me...'   He just knew what it was. He jumped back on his bike and rode off. Just around the bend he met an old man with a cane, hobbling along. 'Come here quick,' said the boy, 'you won't believe what I heard! Satan and the Lord are down at the cemetery dividing up the souls!'  The man said, 'Beat it kid, can't you see it's hard for me to walk.' When the boy insisted though, the man hobbled slowly to the cemetery.
+Standing by the fence they heard, 'One for you, one for me. One for you, one for me.' The old man whispered, 'You've been telling me the truth. Let's see if we can see the Lord...Shaking with fear, they peered through the fence, yet were still unable to see anything. The old man and the boy gripped the wrought iron bars of the fence tighter and tighter as they tried to get a glimpse of the Lord.
+At last they heard, 'One for you, one for me. That's all.. Now let's go get those nuts by the fence and we'll be done....
+They say the old man had the lead for a good half-mile before the kid on the bike passed him.
