April 2008

Sometimes we just need to be reminded!

(sent in to the Vicar)

A well-known speaker started off by holding up a £20 note. In the room of 200, he asked, 'Who would like this £20 note?' Hands started going up so he said, 'I am going to give this £20s to one of you but first, let me do this. He proceeded to crumple up the £20 note.

He then asked, 'Who still wants it?' Still the hands were up in the air. Well, he replied, 'What if I do this?' and he dropped it on the ground, and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe.

He picked it up, now crumpled and dirty: 'Now, who still wants it?' Still the hands went into the air. My friends, we have all learned a very valuable lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value; it was still worth £20.

Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way. We feel as though we are worthless. But no matter what has happened, or what will happen, you will never lose your value.

Dirty or clean, crumpled or finely creased, you are still priceless to those who DO LOVE you. The worth of our lives comes not in what we do or who we know, but by WHO WE ARE and WHOSE WE ARE.

Count your blessings, not your problems; remember: amateurs built the ark …. professionals built the Titanic. If God brings you to it - He will bring you through it.

What a good time we had

By Fr. Geoff

We’ve had some wonderful services in our churches recently; full, lively, enthusiastic and prayerful, enjoyed by all. Mothering Sunday services saw record numbers and a lovely atmosphere of giving thanks for all that Mothers do – past, present and future – and for the sacrifices so many make for their children.

Women’s World Day of Prayer – written by the women of Guyana – was led by Rev’d Dee Fyfe and was a time of prayer, reflection and learning; they like their Scripture in Guyana! Palm Sunday, despite the rain, was just plain fun! Lots of people turned out to see the donkeys (and the Vicar of course!) and to hear the story of Jesus last days as he journeyed to the Cross.

There are no works being done on our church in April

Castle Cary church recently had a burglary: all their brass items were stolen - including a large brass eagle lectern which was chained down! Please be extra vigilant around our church ….. if you see anyone “working” on them they are probably stealing … call the Police (999), Vicar or Wardens – but tell someone FAST!

Women’s World Day of Prayer

The service held at Stocklinch Church on 7th March 2008, raised £91 for this international charity; well done to all involved. Next Service is Friday 6th March 2009 at Chillington!

How do you decide who to marry?

You got to find somebody who likes the same stuff. Like, if you like sports, she should like it that you like sports, and she should keep the crisps and dip coming. Alan, age 10

No person really decides before they grow up who they're going to marry. God decides it all way before, and you get to find out later who you're stuck with. Kristen, age 10

What is the right age to get married?

Twenty-three is the best age because you know the person FOREVER by then. Camille, age 10

How can you tell if two people are married?

You might have to guess, based on whether they seem to be yelling at the same kids. Derrick, age 8

What do your Mum and Dad have in common

Both don't want any more kids. Lori, age 8

You know you're from Somerset when...

This was sent in by some big city folk: I think the jokes on them!!!

You know you're from Somerset when..

  • You thinks Bath's a big city … You can tell sheep from goats
  • You think Bristol is 'up north' … When the sun goes down it gets dark
  • Everywhere else in the UK feels cold
  • You learnt to drive in a field or on a beach
  • You know Tesco's don't make meat, eggs, milk etc.
  • Your local newspaper's headline is 'cow falls off bridge'
  • Your 4×4 has mud on it and it doesn't do the school run
  • You get excited/worried if you ever go on a motorway
